Exploring European Identities/Ideologies by means of (re)presentations of Ancient Greek Drama

1 2007In 2007, a new two-week inter-disciplinary Intensive Course, entitled Exploring European Identities/ideologies by means of (re)presentations of Ancient Greek Drama, was introduced.  It was a three-year project, which was held at Epidavros, organised by the European Network of Research and Documentation of Performances of Ancient Greek Drama for graduate students in Theatre Studies and Classics departments, with the financial support of Socrates/ Erasmus programme and the cooperation of the Hellenic Festival and the Municipality of Asklepieion.

The first course, which took place in July 2007, focused on European Theatre Festivals (from the Greek festivals in honour of god Dionysus in antiquity to those of Syracuse (INDA), Avignon, Epidaurus, and Edinburgh). It intended to examine their functionality, their social and art history, from the 5th century BC until today. The course, which consisted of lectures by academics and artists, small group working sessions and student presentations, aimed to bring together scholars and students from different disciplines and different countries, in order to exchange knowledge on the history of Festivals.

3 2007Professor at the University of Athens, Platon Mavromoustakos, presented the activity of the European Network and gave a lecture on theatrical space (“Ancient drama and theatrical space”).
During the course the students attended the rehearsals and performance of L. Cherubinis’ Medea directed by J. Kokkos. Additionally, they had the opportunity to discuss with the director Theodoros Terzopoulos about the performances of ancient tragedy in Greece and
worldwide. As part of the course the attendants also met with directors Victor Ardittis, Stathis Livathinos, Niketi Kondouri as well as the director of the Hellenic Festival, George Loukos. Composers Christos Leontis, Philippos Tsalahouris and Thodoros Antoniou participated in the seminars as guests.
